Running for Something Bigger Than Ourselves

Guest post by Debbie Pursey, Senior Vice President, Financial Advisor, Wealth Enhancement

I didn’t set out to sponsor the San Francisco Marathon. I was simply part of a local running group, logging miles, chasing big goals, and building friendships along the way. That’s where I met my friend, Greg Fitzgibbons.

We trained together for ultramarathons, pushing each other through long runs, early mornings, and the kind of challenges that create lasting bonds. Then one Saturday, Greg showed up very different than usual. He was quiet and heavy-hearted. That’s when he shared that he had just been diagnosed with multiple sclerosis.

I was devastated for him and his wife, Valerie. For someone as active and driven as Greg, the diagnosis could have been overwhelming.

But what has stayed with me ever since is what came next.

Greg refused to let that diagnosis define him. Instead, he chose to fight back—with courage, resilience, and grit. He completed the MS Run the US relay, running more than 220 miles in just eight days. Today, he continues to train for 62- and 100-mile races, proving that determination can be stronger than any obstacle placed in your path.

Watching Greg has been one of the most powerful lessons of my life.

His journey is a reminder that while we can’t always control the challenges we face, we can choose how we respond to them. Greg has chosen perseverance, hope, and action—and he continues to inspire everyone around him.

As a Certified Financial Planner® professional and Wealth Advisor with Wealth Enhancement, my mission has always been to help improve people’s lives and support them in pursuing what matters most to them. At Wealth Enhancement, we believe in helping clients navigate life’s challenges and opportunities with confidence, and in making a meaningful impact in the communities we serve.

Sponsoring this event is a natural extension of that mission. It’s an opportunity to support those living with MS, raise awareness for a disease that affects nearly one million people in the United States, and stand behind the strength and perseverance I’ve witnessed firsthand through Greg’s journey.

This isn’t just a race for me. It’s personal.

It’s about honoring Greg, supporting the important work of MS Run the US, and helping ensure that individuals and families facing MS know they are not alone. Every mile run and every dollar raised helps bring hope, resources, and awareness to a community that continues to fight with extraordinary courage.

I’m proud to support this event alongside Wealth Enhancement, and I’m grateful for the opportunity to contribute to a cause that means so much to so many.

Because sometimes the most meaningful finish lines aren’t measured in miles, they’re measured in the lives we help impact along the way.
